Our Hawkeyes finished the season with a 12-2 dual meet record, 9 NCAA qualifiers, 4 All-Americans, an NCAA finalist, and another top-5 team finish - we’re proud of the way our guys competed but we’re not satisfied.
Iowa has had at least four All-Americans in 16 straight seasons and 16 times in Tom Brands’ 17 years. Iowa has also had an NCAA finalist in 34 consecutive national tournaments (every year since 1990).
We are happy with our
team and the way they prepared, competed, and dealt with adversity the entire season. “I think our guys handled it as well as you can handle that stuff,” said Brands. “That is what life is about. You can talk about all that, but they handled it well. They went forward with it. It is too early to talk about next year. Drake Ayala has two years of eligibility left. He was in the national finals. He wants to find a way to win that match. Didn’t happen. Have to go forward.”
Drake Ayala led the way by advancing to the title bout at 125lbs. Real Woods (141lbs) & Jared Franek (157lbs) finished their collegiate careers as All-Americans once again. Real placed fourth, while Franek finished in eighth place. Michael Caliendo brought home fourth for the Hawks at
165lbs.

CLUB UPDATE Jacob Warner (97kg), Jaydin Eierman (65kg), Jeremiah Moody (74kg), and Nelson Brands (86kg) are set to compete this Sunday in Fairfax, VA
at the Last Chance Qualifier. All their matches will be streamed live on flowrestling.org and you can find all the event details here.
Our athletes must win the Last Chance Qualifier to qualify for the Olympic Team Trials on April 19-20 in State College, PA. If they do, they will
join already qualified athletes: Spencer Lee (57kg), Austin DeSanto (65kg), Alex Marinelli (74kg) and Tony Cassioppi (97kg)!
